St. Martin wins Women’s title

vol_060PHILIPSBURG--St. Martin Women won the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association Junior Championships at L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium Sunday.  St. Martin defeated Antigua in three straight sets to win the title.
    St. Martin jumped out to the early lead in all three sets. Yet Antigua never gave up.  Their team danced between points, cheered each other and continued to battle even when down by nine or more points. In the second set St. Martin won 25-17 and the French team put Antigua away in the third 25-13.
    St. Maarten Women defeated British Virgin Islands for third place 3-0.
     Thirteen teams competed in two divisions of play.  The Male division was divided into two pools.  In Pool A were St. Lucia, Anguilla, Dominica and Grenada. In pool B were St. Vincent, Antigua and St. Maarten.
    In the Men’s division St. Maarten placed third. St. Maarten defeated Dominica 3-0. In the Gold medal game, defending champion St. Lucia faced St. Vincent.  St. Lucia won a tight first set. St. Vincent bounced back to win the second set decisively 25-10.
    The third set went to St. Vincent 25-17.  St. Lucia battled to win set number four.  They jumped out to a 12-8 but could not hang on as St. Vincent came back to tie the match at 12-12. St. Lucia went up 18-15. St. Vincent came back again to tie it up 21-21.
   St. Vincent went up 22-21.  It was the first time in the set St. Vincent had the lead. St. Lucia tied and prepared to serve. St. Vincent scored again to go up 23-22. St. Vincent took the next point to go up 24-22.
    It was St. Lucia turn to bounced back to make it 24-23 advantage St. Vincent.
    St. Lucia served. It was a good serve, but St. Vincent handled it, set it up and a smash ended the set, match and tournament. St. Vincent won 3-1.
