Hotseat - Akeem J. Lewis

840_hotseatAkeem J. Lewis is a very busy 21-year-old who you may or may not have seen around. We thought it would be interesting to put this young man, who carries himself very well, in this week's Hotseat. Find out why!

How would you describe yourself?

I'm a weirdo, a hard worker, not a follower of the crowd. I like exploring and trying new things.

Where did you go to school and what was it like?

I attended St. Maarten Academy. I was very to myself and wasn't into most of the things my peers were, hence my being antisocial.

What is your current career/profession?

I'm a waiter at Top Carrot, as well as a Muay Thai instructor at SXM BJJ.

How did you get started with Muay Thai classes?

I was approached by Melissa of SXM BJJ. She had a brilliant idea to include Muay Thai at SXM BJJ; and so with the blessing of my sensei, I accepted.

What do you love most about what you do?

I get to teach people not only how to protect themselves, but also patience and self-restraint that can be carried over into their daily lives. I get to make people feel better about themselves mentally and physically, which is cool.

What kind of people do you try to reach out to and why?

People who want to better themselves. Why? Because I was once (and still am) that person.

What is it that makes you good at what you do?

A will of fire, a no-quit attitude, and a great sensei.

What/who motivates you the most and why?

The will to be great, to be better – that's my motivation.

What do you do in your free time?

I like to watch movies, go to the beach and hang with my friends.

What hidden skills or talents do you have?

I just started diving, which is nice. I also try to surf.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To be happy and do what I love.

What was your happiest moment?

The first time I landed a kickflip.

What is your biggest fear?

Besides needles, ending up unhappy and doing something I hate as a career.

What famous people (dead or alive) would you invite to dinner and what would be the one question you'd ask them?

George Lucas and George R.R Martin. I'd ask George Lucas why or what possessed him to sell the rights to the Star Wars franchise to Disney; and I'd tell George RR Martin to keep writing the Game of Thrones books.
