Delta Petroleum to present 18th Billfish Tournament

fishMARIGOT—In just under two weeks Marina Fort Louis parking lot in Marigot transforms into a festival village as fishing boats from all over the Caribbean region fill the marina docks for the much anticipated 18th St. Martin Billfish Tournament starting June 2-6.

$100,000 is up for grabs in cash and prizes for winning teams.

Organised by St. Martin Sport Fishing Association and Calypso events, the format of the tournament remains unchanged except for the addition this year of a White Marlin Challenge to the existing Blue Marlin Challenge. Both of these are optional but teams must first be registered in entry level one prize giving category.

As before prizes are proportionate to number of entry fees. First prize is 20 per cent of entry fees, second prize 15 per cent of entry fees and third prize 10 per cent of entry fees. Heaviest Blue Marlin of the tournament wins 15 per cent of entry fees and Most Blue Marlin Releases 10 per cent of entry fees.

The record prize for any team beating the existing 809lbs Marlin held by the boat "Cassinoha" is a 2015 Bay Boat Contender valued at $75,000. The minimum weight set for Billfish to qualify is 400lbs.

There are also prizes for Heaviest Tuna, Heaviest Wahoo, Heaviest Dolphin, and Best Angler.

Reception and registration of all boats is on Tuesday June 2 from 12:00pm to 6:00pm with the Captain's Briefing that evening at 7:00pm.

Fishing takes place on Wednesday and Thursday with Friday a day off for all boats. The weigh station closing time is at 7:00pm however the public usually gathers around 5:00pm on the dock to see the day's catches come in.

Fishing resumes again on Saturday June 6 before the awards ceremony at 6:00pm closes the competitive part of the tournament. It's worth remembering the fishing village comes alive in the evenings with entertainment laid on each night. The headlining concert on Saturday night after the prize giving features the Jamaican reggae band "Raging Fyah" playing for the first time in St. Martin.

Based on reservations Association President Laurent Petit estimated about 30-40 boats will contest the tournament directed by Stefan Petit.

"We're very happy to have the big boats from Trinidad and Puerto Rico who were here last year coming back again," he said. "So far we have two boats from Trinidad and Tobago, two from Puerto Rico, one from Antigua, five from Guadeloupe, three from St. Barths, and 10 to 12 from St. Martin."

Also new this year is the first St. Martin Boat Show for new and second hand boats organised in conjunction with marine trades association Métimer. This will be held on the last day Saturday while boats are out fishing.

Budget Marine, SAD Groupe, Caraibes Diesel Services, Island Water World & Eric Marine will be exposing over 35 big brands such as Shimano, Sea Doo, Contender, CAT, Mako and many more.

For those wanting to sell a boat a spot can be reserved for 50euros for exposure to many potential buyers. For reservations please call (690) 58. 59. 18 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
