789_hotseatThis week, meet a lovely married couple, Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez and Bunji Garlin from Trinidad. An oft time winner in Road March Competitions and a repeat first-time female champion, Fay Ann is also a soca songwriter, recording artist and performer. She is married to fellow recording artist and Ragga Soca lyricist Bunji Garlin, who has won Trinidad's Soca competition on several occasions. Bunji Garlin's "Brrt" is featured on the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack. Bunji Garlin won the Soul Train Award for Best International Performance for the song "Differentology."

Where were you born and where did you go to school?

Fay Ann: Born in San Fernando General Hospital, went to school at Siparia Road Presbyterian School and then Fyzabad composite school.

Bunji: Cumuto Govt primary school, Sangre Grande Junior Secondary School, Arima Senior Comprehensive School.

Did you take music, singing or dance lessons and when did you start?

Fay Ann: No formal training in any of the above.

Bunji: I never took any lessons in the creative arts.

Who are your mentors?

Fay Ann: I don't have any mentors. I just do me.

Bunji: No I have no mentors.

Tell us how you meet.

Fay Ann: We met through my dad introducing us to each other backstage at a Carnival event.

Bunji: We met backstage when her dad brought us together to meet.

What is the story behind your partnership?

Fay Ann: No story. We met, we courted, we dated and then we married.

Bunji: The story behind our partnership is that we always had this relationship.

How would you describe yourselves?

Fay Ann: I am a very ambitious, hardworking, God-fearing, family-oriented mother, wife and musician.

Bunji: Very cool; very aggressive; slightly confused; but constantly growing, learning and absorbing.

You now belong to a band, what is it called and who founded it?

Fay Ann: The band formerly named Asylum Band was founded by Bunji Garlin. The new name and concept of the band "Asylum Vikings" has been redesigned from the ground up by myself and Bunji Garlin.

Bunji: Fay said it all there (laughs).

To Fay Ann: You are a composer, which song has been your greatest hit? Why?

Catch me. It is the first song of my catalogue that is being played on mainstream stations in the US.

You have toured in many places; where do you like going best?

Fay Ann: Caribbean because of the scenery; US & UK because of the shopping, nightlife and history.

Bunji: For me Grenada, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Germany, London and Sweden.

Where is your favourite vacation place? Why?

Fay Ann: I've only ever taken one real vacation in my life and that was to go with my daughter and husband to Disney World.

Bunji: I have no favourite spot yet as the only place I've had a little vacation was at Disneyworld with my wife and daughter.

Do you have hobbies? What do you do in your spare time?

Fay Ann: Exercise, watch TV, design houses and do interior decorating.

Bunji: Video gaming; video gaming; video gaming.

Do you have any pet peeves?

Fay Ann: YES!!!! People who talk about other people like they know!

Bunji: YEP. People that act like all they are versed in is stupidity!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Fay Ann: I don't see myself in 10 years in the traditional sense. What I do see is somebody who is grateful for every day God allows them to breathe on the face of this earth and spend time with my family.

Bunji: I see myself pushing soca with the same venom outside of its known territory 10 years from now and more.

If you could invite three famous people (dead or alive) for dinner, who would they be and what would you cook for them?

Fay Ann: Jesus Christ, Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King. I would cook ground provision and salt fish.

Bunji: Jesus Christ, Job of the Bible and Noah. I would cook chicken and sweet potatoes.
