Just You Drawings and Designs by Joanne

The artist’s eye sees you clearly, captures something fleeting and saves it for the future. It’s you, just you. “Just You Drawings and Designs” is a new business specialized in hand-drawn portraits by artist Joanne van der Vossen. The name “Just You” comes from each person being a unique individual and so drawing someone means being able to see and capture what it is that makes that person unique.

Portraits are not the only thing Just You Designs can create. If you have a vision, Joanne will create the image – anything from tattoo designs, cartoons, logo designs, children’s illustrations, invitation designs, fashion designs and more.

Joanne van der Vossen is a Dutch-born, US-raised artist who recently moved to St. Maarten from the Netherlands where she lived for the last six years. Joanne has enjoyed drawing and painting all her life, but it was only in high school when she took art classes that she realized how much she enjoyed it. “Hey, maybe I’m actually pretty good at this,” she thought.

One of her first portraits was of a J’Adore perfume advertisement in a magazine. From looking at it, painting a little bit, looking again and so forth, she finished it and was surprised at how it turned out. By doing it more and more just for fun and making things for family and friends, she improved her skills. She took some art classes for practice here and there, usually drawing a model or some set-up that the teacher had placed. She travelled with a notebook and sometimes while waiting or just wanting to relax, she would draw for fun.

Joanne started to take her talent more seriously a few years ago when people began to ask her to make portraits and other drawings for them. While working in a hotel in the United States, she made drawings and funny caricatures of her colleagues, just for her friends and her amusement; but the general manager approached her and instead of being angry (which she was afraid of), he was impressed and told her, “We could use you here!”

She ended up doing several projects for the hotel, from a drawing for children to colour, to the invitation for an event for one of their VIP guests. After that, several colleagues asked her to make them portraits. Seeing how happy and amazed people were with her final products made her feel proud and happy; and it was then that she realized this could be something to do more seriously in the future.

Art is something that runs in Joanne’s family. Her father has always painted and drawn in his spare time, selling his work in local art studios; two of her sisters are also very talented in drawing and painting. While she feels to some extent that natural skill helps, what is more important is that you enjoy it. With a lot of practice and some luck in getting some guidance from a more experienced artist, anyone can improve their skills. Over time, especially when it comes to portraits, you begin to learn small tricks about how to make your drawing really look like the person.

Joanne says that drawing and painting are great hobbies to have to relax and get your mind off things. Furthermore, you really don’t need much, just a piece of paper, something to put it on, a pencil and an idea.
