Elisa Kingsale takes pride in her work as SZV's AVBZ officer

IMG_3582.JPG_lisa_2Home-grown Registered Nurse (RN) Elisa Kingsale (36) gives Health & Beauty insight into her life and work.

How would you describe yourself?

I am an RN; an independent, hardworking single mom; a friendly, helpful and respectable person, who generally enjoys life, but also likes to take time to meditate.

When did you discover your love for healthcare?

I always had the love for helping people, but the big push would be that I always admired my older cousins, who are nurses, and how they devoted their lives to helping and caring for the sick. My role model is my aunt who lives in New York and worked as an RN. She always encouraged me to pursue a career in nursing.

What is it about healthcare that you like?

I love caring for people. It is a joy to see that you have an opportunity to help improve someone's health and they appreciate it.

Where were you educated and what did you study?

I attended Sundial School LADVO Health Care to study for nursing. After high school, I pursued my Licensed Practical Nursing certification at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) via Curacao Nursing School IFE (Instituto pa Formashon den Enfermenia) in 2004 and then an RN course at SMMC via IFE in 2013.

Places worked before SZV and in what positions?

Before I joined SZV, I worked at SMMC's Outpatient Department as a Doctor's Assistant in 2000; as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Medical Ward in 2004; as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Medical Surgical Ward from 2007 to 2013 and as a Registered Nurse in SMMC's Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ward from 2013 to 2014.

How long have you been at SZV and how did this affiliation come about?

I have been employed at SZV for the past 10 months. I was informed by some friends about the vacant position, which I applied for and was hired.

What are your tasks at SZV?

Carrying out the duties according to the country's AVBZ law that was set up to manage the cost of the chronically ill, which includes the mentally- and physically-challenged and clients with long-term or terminal illness.

What differentiates you from other health insurance officers and nurses?

I work according to AVBZ law which caters only to the chronically ill in our community. Most of the times, I deal with care providers and institutions to ensure that clients receive the necessary funds and/or medical aids needed to care for their illness.

Best aspects of being in this position?

I like the fact that I help to resolve problems experienced by chronically ill clients in District Nursing, Medical Aids and physiotherapy.

How do you think you contribute to a better society via your position?

By meeting clients' needs holistically and creating future products to improve healthcare given for chronically ill clients. We can, for example, in the future create a product in collaboration with the healthcare institutions that offer night care assistance for clients who live alone.

How do you think this field can be improved in St. Maarten?

By changing the AVBZ law to accommodate our culture, infrastructure and recent medical developments. The law, for example, restricts us from providing certain patient needs, such as building ramps for wheelchair bound patients.

What's the funniest/scariest thing that has happened to you in your line of work?

I see everything as a learning experience. Nothing is too scary or funny to me.

Future goals (personal and professional)?

To achieve a higher level in my nursing career and to keep myself acquainted with new medical research.

Hobbies?

Travelling, cooking, spending time with my friends, listening to music and spending quality time with my teenage daughter.

Pet peeve?

Discrimination against anyone, whether it's their ethnic background, age or status.

Biggest fear?

Being separated from my only child even for educational achievements.
