Dear Mothers!

100314_img_6691~ For your child(ren) to be okay, you got to be okay ~

By Claudienne Peterson

I'm not in any way trying to downplay the role of fathers with this article, but since Mother's Day is coming up, I definitely want to focus on a mother's role, and my personal experiences and views as far as health and beauty are concerned. I'm just going to lend my personal opinion here.

I've seen and felt in my own experience that once we become mothers, most of us become enamoured – almost obsessed – with our children; this is good, this is part of what nature intended and it ensures the survival of the human race. The "obsession" as I'll call it here slowly wears off a little bit when the child is a bit more independent. This is not something to look down upon or feel guilty about as this too is a natural progression.

It doesn't mean we love our children any less, it does mean that they are becoming more independent and we realize that and allow room for it. It also means that we can put back some of the focus on ourselves. One very hardworking mom of five once told me right after I gave birth to my daughter, "If mommy is happy, then baby is happy." That stuck with me, and after all these years, it still sticks with me. If I'm upset, ill, not feeling well, depressed, sad, in a bad mood, too busy, worrying (basically negative stuff), it does of course affect my child.

Negative states affect our children, if we as mothers are not "good" (meaning happy or just content), mentally balanced, in decent health and so forth, it does affect our children. Yes, everybody reading this may say, "Okay that's logical, everybody already knows this." Well, yes we all "know" this; but what are we doing about it? What are you doing about it, mothers? Are you taking care of yourselves? I don't just mean putting on the makeup and looking the part; I don't just mean paying all the bills on time, or going to every meeting, or every "child-centred" event; I don't just mean doing your job perfectly and getting your nails done every so often.

Yes, these things are important; they are SO important. But these things are not more important than your health – than ALL of your health; WHOLE health. I'm talking about your mental, physical and spiritual health. Do you feel good? FEEL good? No physical pain in the body, no emotional pain in your heart or head?

Okay, once again you may be thinking, "But that's normal, everybody goes through hard times, and worries." Once again, I'm not trying to take anything away from what fathers do, but women these days DO have a lot on their plate and many do it alone. Whether they are doing it alone or not, I've noticed women neglecting their health, and maybe even denying unhealthy practices, and denying that their health is in a certain state. I see this denial happening especially because women want to be super women these days and many times something has to "fall". We all want to look good, be sociable and happy, dress the part, be successful, but many times, this is at the cost of our health.

And now I get to my point: Mothers, are you sleeping enough? Are you giving yourself a little bit of time each day (even if it is 5 minutes) to meditate, pray, be alone, think positive thoughts, listen to a happy song, write a poem, or whatever floats your boat? Some of you may laugh and say, "I don't even have five minutes a week." Giving yourself a break in the day is very important to notice your breath, to be thankful you are alive, to appreciate yourself and all you are doing for your child(ren).

Mothers, are you eating right? I'm not trying to get in your business, but what you eat over time does affect your health. Don't make me get into it here, look it up, we all know it's true. Are you trying to get in enough of those fruits and vegetables, not just for YOUR health but for your children's health? Their example is you. We all want our children to eat healthy, but many times we fail to do it ourselves. Mothers, are you getting enough exercise? It only takes 30 minutes a day of walking, if you feel that going to a gym or dance-class is too much, and if you are on a tight budget, try starting with walking just three times a week; you pick your days at the times that best suit you, but START NOW. Or maybe it doesn't have to be walking; turn on the radio and dance for 30 minutes, that's fun. Have a jump-rope at home? Try that. Or put on a YouTube video and get started with basics, but the important thing is to move! Make a plan now to fit exercise into your life if you haven't already.

Mothers, we are not getting younger, but we can choose to live better. So no matter what the day brings, make your efforts for yourself to put a smile on your face, make healthy choices, get enough sleep, eat balanced meals, get the regular check-ups necessary at the doctor and include exercise and a calming moment each day into your life. What affects us affects our children whether we believe it or not. Like it or not, that's just the way it is.

Like I said, we have a lot on our plate, and whether we are doing it alone or not, the choices are ours. I wish all of you mothers a healthy, happy and beautiful Mother's Day!
