Being a SXM Mom

mom3Discussing motherhood with Mother of the Year, Keysy Ramirez

By Rik Haverman

Tomorrow, Sunday May 10, is Mother’s Day – a day on which all mothers (as well as motherhood) are being honoured by their beloved ones. Last year, Mrs. Keysy Ramirez won the 2014 Ms. Elegance Mother of the Year pageant. The pageant queen is a 25-year old mother of two: a six-year old boy and a three-year old girl. She is a born and raised St. Maartener and currently working at the commercial department of GEBE N.V. In the future, Ramirez would like to become a certified aesthetician.

The Miss Elegance Mother of the Year 2014 thinks she won last year’s pageant because she gave everything she had. “I wanted to stand out more than the others. I really wanted to win and I gave it my all. Eventually, out of the five segments, I won four.” Although Ramirez won the pageant, she preferred that all participants could have won. “The group of contestants was small. I bonded a lot with the other girls and they were all amazing moms. Unfortunately, only one could win.”

Ramirez’ love for her children was immediately apparent during the interview. Proudly, she speaks about the activities of her kids. “My kids are very active. My son, who is growing up so quickly, participates in a swimming team and is also in our local drumming class. My daughter just started pre-school and is also taking swimming classes. Besides that, she takes dancing classes as well.”

The young mother has a clear vision on motherhood. “My philosophy as a mom is not giving up, being a fighter, and putting your children first. I try to be the best example and give them the best I can. I try to give my kids everything I couldn’t have as a child but still teach them respect, manners and appreciation for everything they get. I teach my kids to thank God for all the blessings around them and each day that has been given to them.”

The 2014 Miss Mother Elegance is also very grateful for motherhood. “Motherhood taught me, and made me grow, a lot; even more after the pageant. The pageant made me realize that there’s nothing I can’t do as a mother.” Because of the latter, the pageant queen has a message to all mothers on The Friendly Island. “Sometimes mothers think that their own life stops when they become a mom. That’s not true. As a mom, you can still do things for yourself. Grow. You can continue going to school. You can still have a social life.”

Although Ramirez loves being a mother, she does sometimes encounter difficulties because she is single. “For me, the hardest part of being a mother is not being with my kids as much as I want to. I’m a single mom so I still have to work and study. This can be challenging sometimes since I don’t have a partner to raise my kids with. Therefore, I’m really grateful for my mother and brother; they help me out a lot.” These difficulties, however, do not outweigh the joy of motherhood, according to Ramirez. “The best part of being a mother is simply waking up to my kids, knowing that they are my blessing; that they are healthy and strong; that they are simply growing up; going to school and being socially active within the community.”

The Mother Elegance 2014 is glad she can raise her kids here on St. Maarten. “For me, St. Maarten is a good place to raise my children. My family lives here, so they can help me out. I also want to raise my kids here because we are all born and raised Friendly Islanders: my kids, my family and me. I wouldn’t change it for another place.”

According to Ramirez, raising children is all about being hands-on with them. “It’s all about keeping your kids on the right track. Like in every other country, there is crime on St. Maarten, bullying in school, etc. My solution for that is being hands-on with my kids, teach them what is right and to look at the bigger picture.”

Ramirez’ perfect Mother’s Day is spending the day with her kids: “I want to eat breakfast together and afterwards relax on the beach. At the end of Mother’s Day, we are going to prepare for Monday, because my kids need to go to school again and I need to work.” She also has something to say to all St. Maarten kids regarding Mother’s Day: “Be very thankful to your mom. Sometimes, something as simple as saying ‘Mom, I love you’ can really light up a mother’s day.”

This year’s Miss Elegance Mother of the Year pageant is slated for Saturday, May 16, at Rock House in Port de Plaisance. Six contestants will compete for the title of Miss Mother Elegance 2015. The winner will go to France next year where she will defend her title and St. Maarten during the Miss Elegance Mother Dom.
