Street Kings beat selection in first of two exhibition games

streetkingsPHILIPSBURG—Dazzling footwork and shots of pin point accuracy by the world renowned Street Kings assured them a comfortable 6-2 victory in the first of two exhibition games against selection teams in the Futsal Rivalries competition held in the L.B. Scott Auditorium Sunday evening.

Curacao's Djuric "Dju Dju" Ascension scored two goals for the Kings in the first half while Melvin "Lem" Grootfaam, Virbian "Vebo" Walker, and Edward "Edje" van Gils contributed one each. Suriname's Orry Fromes was the other Kings player showing exceptional speed and skill about the court.

In the second half the selection A team, chosen from players in the two previous matches between Caribbean Auto, Flames United, Presidente and Emile Photo, fought back to score two goals while King's Melvin Grootfaam scored his second goal.

The earlier games saw Flames United trounce Caribbean Auto 3-2 and Presidente sent Emile Photo packing 8-3.

Results of the games between Nagico Fun Makers and Risc Takers, and Paradise Inn against Strikers FC were not available by press time, neither the result of the B selection game against Street Kings.

The Street Kings who are experts at street soccer held demonstrations and clinics in the public schools on Friday and on Saturday gave a youth clinic on the Boardwalk from 3 to 5:00pm followed by exhibition games.

Edward van Gils explained part of what Street Kings do is to inspire people and bring a smile to their faces.

"People forget that sports is about fun and not making money; we want to show it is still fun," he said. "We try to inspire kids and show them that sometimes when you chase a dream it's not always the reality but if you keep trying another dream will pop up. That's what happened to us; some of the guys tried to be professional but didn't make it. But we kept playing and now we're doing this professionally for a living, touring all around the world.

"On this tour we are five but in Holland there are 21 guys. We have guys in Abu Dhabi, Indonesia, Moscow, Suriname, in LA and Miami USA. We spread like a disease!"

He added the clinics on the Boardwalk and in the schools were amazing. "When you see the reaction of the kids, it was all smiles. They didn't care about winning or losing. For them it was all fun."

St. Maarten Futsal Association President Steven Tjin Aton noted the Street Kings were last in St. Maarten in 2013 and it was such a success that he was able to bring them back this year thanks to several sponsors. The RISC Takers were also instrumental in arranging the trip.
