Fittest on the Rock Recap!

IMG-20150530-WA0015By Claudienne Peterson

"Fittest on the Rock" happened last Saturday at the Blue Mall in Cupecoy. This was the first event of its kind on St. Maarten; featuring local and foreign athletes.

The event was a strength and endurance workout competition where the contestants participated in various workouts after indicating which categories they wanted to take part in. For some workouts, the challenge was to complete the most repetitions in a time frame; for other workouts, it was about the maximum weight you can do.

The workouts were divided between male and female. There were 60 participants in total: 35 male and 25 female. The oldest was 52 and the youngest 14. For the weightlifting categories, participants were categorized by weight.

The event was a lot larger than expected, and although very expertly organized and executed, it went until much later than 6:00pm. Fans, friends and family members stayed till the very end to see all the medals, trophies and prizes given out. According to management, a little over 2,000 people visited the mall during the day from opening to closing time.

The show of strength and endurance inspired and motivated many adults and children alike. It was a free event, and the first time that Team Don't Quit put out such an event on the island. Team Don't Quit is a group of young St. Maarteners who in recent years returned from the Netherlands.

Health & Beauty applauds the hard work and dedication that went into this event. There has never been such an inspiring event on the island. The teams were competing but still motivated and pushed and applauded each other; it was a true show of sportsmanship. There was definitely unity among the athletes. And it was such a great example for the children. Many competitors broke their own personal records on Saturday.

According to Team Don't Quit member Ardwell, one of the main organizers of the event: "The end goal is to make this a regional event, this was a totally exciting, entertaining and mesmerizing event. We definitely have proven that we have a lot of athletic stars on the rock, and the nearby islands. I felt the goose bumps, saw the awe in my little daughter's eyes, and even overheard a very young boy saying, 'Look at that girl bench pressing those weights. A girl?! Those weights must be fake.' I did turn and let him know that those weights were definitely not fake, and that those girls work just as hard as the boys to get to that kind of strength! This event brought a lot of bonds, a lot of people together."

A big Thank You and Congratulations to all the athletes, volunteers, sponsors and spectators!
