Always be prepared

Dear Editor,

The saying is well prepared and well documented. I do not know that if it was grandstanding or trying to influence the audience, but at a certain moment during the meeting of Parliament I heard one of the MP's declare that Holland does not have an Integrity Chamber of their own. If that is not so, why is our government fooling us? Yes, I said our government, because if Holland, which has several politicians and government officials who were indicted and convicted lately, does not need one, why are we accepting all this harassment.

And it also can be hinted or probably said that our ex finance minister was falsely accused of fraud by a Dutchman. So there is something that I am missing. Now why did I start with well prepared and well documented?

I have never had a conversation with MP Emmanuel, so I do not know what makes him tick, but from following him in Parliament meetings I have decided to say what I have said in the past. It is never completely in any MP's interest for their colleagues to be too popular. They will want each other to make a slip up once in a while. And if it not in their interest, they will not correct you about it. It is just like baseball. You might go to another team and your former team mates will know your weakness and justifiably so use it against you.

It is my interest that all of the MP's do the right thing; because the country will be run in the correct way and that will profit everybody including me. So it is in my interest to point out these things that I think will help him and in extension the people in the future. I think that the President of Parliament should have called his attention when he was not addressing, but talking directly to the Minister of Justice.

Again, if the President of Parliament could get away with it by letting Emmanuel excite himself without stopping him, he too is opposition and will act dumb. I do not know if any agreement was made or if the rules of order have changed, but I also think that the President of Parliament should not have permitted the Minister of Justice to speak to Emmanuel personally either. The Justice Minister told Emmanuel that he did not have his facts straight. And because Emmanuel was not well documented and well prepared, he was mum. He could not apologize for mentioning those names and also could not stand by what he had said concerning them.

My friend Tallboy would have said "Dennis got the first lick". And he did because now we do not know if Emmanuel was allowed to mention those names (The President did not stop him) and the people do not know for sure if Emmanuel had his facts straight. The justice minister did not confirm whether Emmanuel was right or wrong. He said that he did not have his facts straight. You there see the Justice Minister was a scout whose motto is to be prepared.

To Emmanuel I would suggest that he talk to some seasoned or ex politicians, not about politics alone but also about tactical moves during the meetings. You are in there, so you have to know how the game is played, besides Parliamentary procedures. A whole lot of people know that things have happened here, that is exactly why the question of integrity is prevalent these days.

All of us have integrity issues. The difference is that you are being paid to deal with yours in a different way. And then your personality calls for you to write what you intend to say during meetings, in order to avoid your emotions from getting the better part of you, which can cause you to say the wrong things while meaning it right. My father taught me as a young policeman, that I didn't have to get mad with a person, because I did not agree with how they behaved. Find out whether your actions concerning the mentioning of those names were correct or not, and then be the bigger man if necessary. The people need adequate representation.
