Dear Queenie,
My brother died years ago but his widow stayed close to our family. Eventually she remarried but she still stayed in touch, especially because our mother loves her grandchildren so much.
The problem is her idea of staying in touch means giving us all the news, not just about the children, which we want to know, but all about her social life and her new marriage which we couldn't care less about.
Queenie, how can we tell get her it's just too much info?—Had enough
Dear Had enough,
Why waste the effort?
If she keeps in touch by letter/e-mail/text message, ignore the parts that do not interest you and do not respond to them. If she does it by word of mouth, in person or by telephone, change the subject when you have heard enough, or, if it is a phone call, make an excuse to terminate the conversation – another call coming in, the doorbell is ringing, your dinner on the stove is boiling over ... you get the idea.
