~ A day of pleasant surprises ~

One of the island's landmark culinary institutions, a favourite spot for many decades, how had I not visited Mini Club before? Perhaps my life partner's claim to "not care for seafood" was a factor, but I hold no such qualms, and besides, the menu offers chicken, beef, and much more – clearly, it's not only a seafood restaurant. So when I offered to take my French-side friend to lunch, I was very happy to follow her suggestion to go to her regular spot for lunch, Mini Club.

We decided to meet there at 1:00pm and I found plenty of parking close by along the waterfront, even though it was a Wednesday, when the market is at its busiest. That was a pleasant surprise! As I walked up the stairs and into the dining area, I was greeted by the genuinely warm smiles of the staff. Also a couple of good friends from Simpson Bay were at a nearby table; that was another pleasant surprise.

I met my friend and we had a chance to catch up over cool glasses of ice tea and freshly-squeezed orange juice. The view of the harbour of Marigot was fantastic, and the breeze was fresh and cool. A basket of bread and butter appeared as if from nowhere, and we lost track of the time, but eventually we did order from the menu.

She suggested her favourite light lunch: Avocado and Lobster Salad, which sounded amazing and when it came it looked even better! For me though, I wanted to try something more unusual, so I opted for conch stew. I asked for some veggies and rice to come along with it. The stew was a deep red colour and full of conch meat and veggies, very rich. The accompaniment was another pleasant surprise among the plate of goodies, I saw one of my favourite things: sweet potato fries.

Mini Club is upscale, but casual. Its reputation is well deserved. The decor and the menu pull strongly from traditions of the French-Creole. The upper levels are almost like a tree-house, built on a platform perched on the trunks of coconut palms and almond trees. The famous buffet on Wednesday and Saturday nights is an island tradition. It comprises more than 30 dishes, often including rich conch chowder, piles of grilled lobster, as well as roast leg of lamb, black Angus roast beef and roast pig. This is something to keep in mind. What could be better than a feast to impress your guests, perfect for celebrations of noteworthy accomplishments than Mini Club?
