854_upholPassing on the art of upholstery at workshop

Seasoned upholsterer and businesswoman June Peters will be passing on her knowledge of restoring furniture to the island's youth (12- to 18-year-olds), who are interested in learning this craft, at the Reginald Peters Jr. Upholstery Workshop on July 6-10, 9:00am-5:00pm.

Peters told Out N About that the workshop is about teaching youngsters the art of re-upholstering furniture and auto interior. Participants will also learn about the different types of fabrics, vinyl and accessories that are used to complete an upholstering job.

They will also be taught about sewing and upholstering as decoration, car interior, home furniture and boat seats.

"Learning upholstery is important because you can help yourself at home or make it a profession," Peters said when asked why upholstering is an interesting skill to learn.

Upholstery can be applied to interior decorating by making furniture more beautiful. It can also be applied to boat seating areas, car seats, inner roof and many more things.

This will be Peters' third annual workshop. She said teaching youngsters the art of upholstery was a dream of her late husband Reginald J. Peters Jr., after whom the workshops were named.

"I came to love it because I saw old, worn out furniture become brand new and this amazed me," she said. "The beautiful fabrics and vinyl that could be applied were very exciting. With this, I realised that young girls and boys could get into this field, which could lead them into becoming big interior decorators and designers; the young men could pimp up their rides. I felt it was my duty to do this. At the end of the programme, parents will be proud to know that their child upholstered their dining chairs and the kids will be happy to have achieved a Certificate of Completion. Let's keep our kids busy. So much can be done, especially if you love working with your hands."

The workshop is free of cost for participants; however, coordinators would be grateful if companies help offset some of the expenses that will be incurred by becoming a sponsor. Companies or individuals interested in being a sponsor can call Peters at 556-1527; you may also call Peters to register. Participants should be properly identified and are required to walk with their own four dining chairs to learn the art of upholstery.

The workshop will be held at Upholstery World at Bush Road #53.
